I'm trying but.........

Okay. I determined to read some "classic" books this year. You know, those books that everyone thinks you should have read by now and, sometimes, you even pretend you HAVE read! So, I started one last week-Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I have always heard wonderful things about the book. Somehow, I have never read it, though. I haven't even seen the movie. I must admit that I am struggling to read it. I don't know what it is but I am just not getting into it. Do any fans of the book have any suggestions for me? Should I just keep plugging along? Is there a Pride and Prejudice for Dummies?

All of this brings me to two questions for my friends out there:

1. What book have YOU started to read but just couldn't make it all the way through?
2. What book(s) do you think are a must for the well-read woman?

Another thing-go on over to http://glamlifehousewife.blogspot.com/ and help her with her baby needs this contest. You just might win something!

Don't give up on P&P! It is by far one of the greatest books I've ever read.
I haven't given up on too many books, but have started, set aside, and revisited some books a few times- The Poisonwood Bible (which I did finally read and do recommend), East of Eden (which I've now read twice and also recommend).
Other "must-reads:" A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Things Fall Apart, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Little Women.
That should get you started. :)

AAAAAHHHHH, DON'T give up on Pride and Prejudice! By far, my FAVORITE book ever. Ever. I am actually teaching it to my students right now, and I always tell them that honestly the first 10 chapters are rough to get through. This is because authors during this era (especially Jane) created many characters in order to extend their story lines, and she introduces those characters throughout the first 10ish chapters. Kinda slow. Just wait until the sassy and witty Elizabeth meets her match in the quick and stoic Darcy; wait until the slimy Mr. Collins makes his move on a few of the Bennet girls; wait until the devious Mr. Wickham's past is revealed and the truth about Darcy comes out!!!!!

Maybe you should come sit in with my Seniors. They hated it about a week ago, but now....they actually admit that they LOVE this book. Mmm, me too.

Pride & Prejudice - I've read it for various classes, bought & watched the movie & still, can't REALLY get into it, although I appreciate it.

:-) I'm not "well-read" - I enjoy blood & guts, true crime, vampire, romance - you know, I'm "that" type of person...
Hope you make it through the book though!!

i hate to admit it since I'm a teacher, but I'm not much of a reader. I just rarely take the time to cozy up with a book. Hang in there, though, I'm sure there are great things hidden between those pages.
